What are CompTIA Certifications?

How IntelliTec Can Prepare You for Success as an IT Professional

If you are considering a career in IT, you have probably heard of the CompTIA certifications. But what exactly are these certifications? And do you need them to begin a successful IT career? IntelliTec is proud to be an Academy Partner of CompTIA, and our Computer Systems Technician program trains students for these important industry certifications. Read on to find out more about CompTIA, and how IntelliTec College can prepare you for success as an IT professional.

The Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) is a non-profit trade association founded in 1982. CompTIA is an industry leader and IT professionals with CompTIA certifications demonstrate to potential employers their advanced level of knowledge and skill. If you are considering a career in IT, it is worthwhile to find out more about the certifications available. Here is an overview of some of the CompTIA certifications IntelliTec College can prepare you for:

CompTIA: A+ Certification

IntelliTec’s Computer Systems Technician program is designed to be an entry-level introduction to the IT world. This program teaches students basic hardware and computer repair skills. Graduates will be able to build and repair a computer, install, configure, and maintain a variety of Windows operating systems in a stand-alone, workgroup, and domain environment. Graduates will be prepared to test for the CompTIA A+ certification, a certification recognized as the best way to demonstrate that the individual has learned the foundations of PC support and administration.

CompTIA: Network+ Certification

Students at IntelliTec are taught the foundations of networking, as well as configuring, administering, and repairing complex computer networks. Students are prepared to test for the CompTIA Network+ certification, which covers network technologies, installation and configuration, media and topologies, management, and security. The CompTIA Network+ is a vendor neutral certification that proves an IT professional’s expertise in managing, maintaining, troubleshooting, installing and configuring basic computer networks.

CompTIA: Security+ Certification

IntelliTec’s Computer Systems Technician program provides students with knowledge of security concepts, tools, and procedures to react to security incidents and anticipate security risks so they can take action to guard against them. The CompTIA Security+ Certification demonstrates the student’s ability to secure networks, computers and servers. While there is no required prerequisite, the CompTIA Network+ certification is recommended before taking the Security+ exam. The CompTIA Security+ exam covers the important foundational principles for securing a network and managing risk. Access control, identity management and cryptography are important topics on the exam, as well as selection of appropriate mitigation and deterrent techniques to address network attacks and vulnerabilities. Security concerns associated with cloud computing, BYOD and SCADA are addressed in the Security+ exam.

CompTIA: Linux+ Certification

The Computer Systems Technician program at IntelliTec prepares students for the Linux+ certification by teaching students the Linux interface and functions of the operating system. Linux+ is not an entry level certification. Students interested in this exam should first have their CompTIA A+ and Network+ certifications. Two exams are necessary to be certified: LX0-101 and LX0-102. These exams cover system architecture; Linux Installation and package management; GNU and Unix commands; devices, Linux file systems, and file system hierarchy standard. LX0-102 covers shells, scripting and data management; user interfaces and desktops; administrative tasks; essential system services; networking fundamentals; and security.

The Computer Systems Technician program at IntelliTec is designed to prepare students for each of the above CompTIA certifications. At IntelliTec, students learn to set up Internet connections and establish different types of networks like LAN (local area network) or WAN (wide area network). Students learn how to establish and keep routers and servers functioning, and, when systems malfunction, how to find solutions quickly without paralyzing the other computers and equipment in the network. IntelliTec’s program also teaches the necessary interpersonal “soft skills” by showing students how to provide help and advice to people and organizations using computer software or equipment. Upon completion of the program, students will be thoroughly prepared for employment as an entry-level IT professional, in roles such as helpdesk technician, computer systems/desktop support technician, and network systems administrator. IntelliTec’s program is designed to be completed in just 10.5 months, as is offered at their Albuquerque and Colorado Springs campus locations.
