The Value of a Technical Education

Why choose IntelliTec College over a 4-year university

Colleges and universities have traditionally been ranked and evaluated based on SAT scores and acceptance rates. In the past, potential students relied upon standard metrics such as these to compare the educational options available to them, and ultimately decide which school is their best fit. These standards have long  been considered the best, and often only, ways to objectively evaluate schools. Prospective students, however, are now increasingly looking at a new metric in order to make their school choice. By looking at outcomes, most specifically income earning potential, students can determine which school will provide them with the best value of education.

This newest methodology allows students to compare schools based on their return on investment (ROI). Using this metric, prospective students consider how much their degree can potentially earn them over the duration of their career, as compared to the amount of their investment (the cost of the degree). When this new methodology is applied, schools like the IntelliTec College, which offers vocational training programs that lead to technical careers in healthcare and the trades, can come out on top. The results may be surprising to some, but they point to the value of occupational training.

The Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce recently studied this very topic, looking in depth at four year universities compared to two year vocational and technical schools. The Georgetown University study compared the cost of obtaining a degree at a given school to the mid- and long-term career earnings of the degree holder. The study found that a degree from a technical, or occupational school, such as the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J., was more valuable on average over a 40-year career than a degree from a prestigious Ivy League school, such as Princeton University, $1.8 million compared with $1.6 million. Martin Van Der Werf, an associate director at the center and an author of the study, remarked on the results, which were surprising to many. He said, “You can’t always go by the biggest brand name. You may think the biggest brand will have a higher return [for graduates]. But what the data tells me is that a place that specializes in occupations in industries can be better.”

Is it possible a technical education from a career-training school could earn you more in the long run than a degree from a four year university? The study’s results point to a freshly emerging trend in the job market: the career opportunities for tomorrow’s American workers will not necessarily demand a 4-year university degree, but may well require technical training instead. Georgetown’s study pointed specifically to the importance of training today’s students for tomorrow’s jobs in the healthcare and STEM industries. The majority of job openings in the future will be in fields such as these, and it will be technical, occupational, and vocational schools that will provide the training and educational programs to accommodate this job growth.

IntelliTec College, with campuses in Colorado Springs, Grand Junction, and Pueblo, Colorado, and Albuquerque, New Mexico, offers this kind of specialized career training. IntelliTec offers hands-on, technical training for careers in healthcare and the trades, including programs for Medical Assistants, Nursing Assistants, Dental Assistants, Computer Systems Technicians, Automotive Technicians, and HVAC Technicians.
