According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for dental assistants is expected to grow by 11% from 2018 to 2028, faster than the average for all occupations. At IntelliTec, students learn in the classroom and then apply their skills in a modern clinical setting by performing practical laboratory tasks and procedures. The Dental Assistant certificate program includes an externship at an approved outside facility. Externships provide students with supervised on-the-job training and the opportunity to practice skills learned throughout the program and gain specialized knowledge of individual skills. In addition to the externship component, IntelliTec students are able to apply their learning through the campus’ community dental clinic, in which the Grand Junction community can obtain free or low-cost dental care, while IntelliTec students gain valuable work experience performing dental procedures such as x-rays and impressions. In the spirit of community service, IntelliTec also works closely with other community outreach providers, such as Remote Area Medical (https://www.ramusa.org), to provide dental services to the underserved rural community. On October 4 and 5, 2019, Dental students at IntelliTec will be going to help at the Colorado Mission Of Mercy (https://comom.org/), to give no-cost dental evaluations, cleanings, fillings, root canals and extractions as needed. As with the other clinics IntelliTec has sponsored, students benefit from the practical application of the skills they have been training for, and the public benefits from the community service provided.
Graduates of IntelliTec’s dental assistant program will be prepared to function as entry level dental assistants, and assume the responsibilities of performing chairside assisting procedures, maintaining and supplying clinical areas, scheduling patient appointments, maintaining patient charts and records, producing dental radiographs of diagnostic quality, as well as positioning and preparing patients for treatment or surgery. - National Entry Level Dental Assistant Exam through the Dental Assistant National Board (DANB)
- Infection Control
- Radiology
