CCR Instructor Recognized by ACCSC
At IntelliTec College, we have made many changes in recent months in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In the July edition of their newsletter Spotlight on Excellence, our accrediting body, the ACCSC, highlighted and shared some solutions and strategies ACCSC-accredited schools have implemented to address current challenges. The newsletter also celebrated the great work happening at ACCSC-accredited schools, and one of our IntelliTec instructors, Kyle Gilliam, received special recognition for his work with our College and Career Readiness (CCR) program. Read on to learn more about one of our favorite instructors, and how IntelliTec is working harder than ever to prepare our students for their future careers!
In the ACCSC’s July edition of the Spotlight on Excellence, the article titled “College and Career Readiness: A Journey with the Perfect Guide,” by Dr. David Scott, Director of IntelliTec College, highlighted instructor Kyle Gilliam’s work with our CCR program. IntelliTec first developed the CCR course because we wanted to ensure our students learn the essential skills needed to be successful in the workplace. In order to help set our students on a path towards success, IntelliTec students take the College and Career Readiness course as their first course when they start any program at IntelliTec College. The six-week intensive course provides instruction and demonstration to enhance professional life and work skills including:
- Stress Management
- Effective Study Skills
- Time Management
- Team Building
- Critical Thinking
- Financial Literacy
- Diversity and Conflict Resolution
- Overcoming Road Blocks to Success
Our CCR course is designed to set students up for success both in college and in their future careers. A critical part of this model, however, is the guide who leads students down this path towards success. Our Colorado Springs CCR instructor, Kyle Gilliam, consistently receives positive comments from students, even during this unusual time of COVID and online distance learning. Mr. Gilliam has 21 years of experience as an instructor, and has worked in numerous diverse settings alongside students of all ages and backgrounds, including time spent living and teaching on the Navajo Indian Reservation. According to Mr. Gilliam, his mission is to inspire individuals to see the value in learning and growing and to help foster courage and confidence as students prepare for their college and career experiences.
Mr. Gilliam faced a unique challenge in March 2020 when it was mandated that all students move to online educational delivery due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Just three weeks into the very first CCR course, Mr. Gilliam moved his course delivery and his 60+ students online. Despite the unusual circumstances, IntelliTec received an overwhelming positive response from the students enrolled in this specific course. Upon completion of the course, students expressed how well Mr. Gilliam led this course, and many stated how excited they were about their educational journey. IntelliTec received feedback from students expressing how they felt confident and prepared to engage in the classroom and lab setting, even though they didn’t know when they would be able to return to the campus learning environment.
Our College and Career Readiness course was originally designed for traditional on-campus learning, but under Mr. Gilliam’s leadership, we have been able to integrate the unique challenges our students are facing, and provide them with innovative and exciting ways to meet those challenges head on and to overcome them. In Mr. Gilliam’s handling of the move to online instruction, having to deal with the unknown and unfamiliar, he demonstrated exemplary qualities and ultimately became a great example of how to adjust, adapt, and overcome challenging situations.
We have received so much wonderful feedback about Mr. Gilliam’s instructional methods, and we are so pleased to have him at the helm of our CCR program. Mr. Gilliam’s unique delivery methods include engaging and interactive projects which bring a new outlook on preparing our students for college and life. Mr. Gilliam has demonstrated an ability to engage students and keep them motivated to learn, regardless of the learning environment and the uncertainty of when students will be able to return to campus. This innovative and student-centered course, led by an exceptional instructor, has led to demonstrably better retention, motivation, and inspiration amongst not only students, but also faculty and staff alike.
